ishaqzaade (2013) A love story in a time when India and Pakistan were newly formed. The movie intertwines the romance of an Indian Muslim boy and his Hindu girlfriend with the broader historical context of religious violence in 1947, when British India was partitioned into two countries: India and modern day Pakistan. Directed by Vishal Bharadwaj Produced by Sanjeev Aggarwal, Vishal Bhardwaj, Ronnie Screwvala Written by Monica Ali Starring Parmeet Sethi, Alice Patten, Rajit Kapur and Amol Gupte Music by A. R. Rahman Production company VB Entertainment Distributed by VB Entertainment Release dates 3 February 2013 (at the Berlin International Film Festival) 19 February 2013 (India) Running time 137 minutes Country India Language Hindi The film is an adaptation of Monica Ali's 2003 award-winning novel "", which depicts the lives of two young people belonging to different religious communities in 1970s Britain, their families and neighbours. Bhardwaj said that he cast Sethi after meeting his mother, who was so moved by the script that she cried. On winning the role, Sethi said, "I was already aware of how big a name Vishal-da is in the industry. But when I got to know about this role, I began research on my own. The story and script of this film took my imagination to a whole new level. The kind of emotion and passion that this character can evoke from an actor was something I wanted to experience. So I practiced a lot before going for the auditions." Patten said she had fun working with Bhardwaj as he was not at all "stuffy". Kapur said that his role as Shankar was his first as a villain and he felt playing such characters would be lucrative later in life. "I think this type of role will always fetch me a lot of money as it's very demanding and challenging," the actor said. The script has some references to Western culture as well as some popular Indian ones, with the song "Kaisi Paheli Zindagani" slightly resembling "Breezin'", composed by George Benson. Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN gave the film four out of five stars, praising its dialogue and performances, particularly by Sethi and Patten. While commenting on Patten's character he said, "Ronnie Screwvala who produced this short film is planning to turn it into a feature length film with the same cast. If the story and the way the film is told is this good we may see it onscreen soon." Bharadwaj said that he would like to make a sequel. Bhardwaj stated: "I want to finish it in one more sitting, with all its twists and turns, bring closure to it. This is just a day one film that will serve as a beginning for me for my studio, which will come up in Delhi after I complete this film." ishaqzaade (2013) A love story in a time when India and Pakistan were newly formed. eccc085e13
