No posturing Megatron-Optimus stand-offs or piloting of walking cities here: multiplayer is a completely different game, as is so often the case for shooters. While the campaign involves running and blasting easily-dispatched drones as an improbably self-regarding soundtrack booms and familiar faces jabber gags and exposition, FoC's multiplayer is actually about transforming.

As a result, the public game is largely about massed, fairly close-up scraps rather than the hide and seek and headshotting which characterises so many other multiplayer shooters. It's a good way to feel involved, even if a preponderance of one-shot-kill heavy weapons means there's still a good chance the less experienced will feel a bit persecuted. Vehicle weapons are by and large a bit weaker than bot-mode weapons, so tend to be more about harassment than the pursuit of victory - and again, that ensures transformation is regular and vital, rather than an incidental gimmick.
I've given FoC's more time than it perhaps deserves, purely because transformation being part of the combat strategy was enormously welcome after the short thrift it was given in singleplayer. It feels cruelly curtailed and perfunctory though - it absolutely understands what an always-accessible vehicle mode can mean for multiplayer, but it hasn't put that into a particularly compelling context. That I can't ever find a game in any mode except straight-up team deathmatch perhaps speaks to this - people are there to blast and to grind levels rather than explore what's possible.
On the Xbox website there is a listing for a character and map pack #1. It includes two new multiplayer maps, Havoc and Fortress, two new Escalation maps, Forsaken (Autobots) and District (Decepticons). There will also be new characters, Scattershot, Onslaught, and the Pre-order characters(Shockwave, Demolishor, and Jazz). You can play those characters in Escalation mode, and you can play their chassis in regular multiplayer. The trailer for the DLC was released on July 21. The trailer also gives a release date of the DLC: July 27. According to IGN.com it will be $10.00/7.99 on the PlayStation Store and 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox Live. A Second DLC pack; Characters and map pack #2, was released on the 7th of September, containing three new multiplayer maps: Horizon, Sector and Metropolis, two Escalation maps: Static(Decepticons) and Pulse(Autobots) and two new multiplayer characters, a playable leader class Zeta Prime for Autobots and the Scout Dead End for Decepticons. No announcements about a PC version of the DLC, but there is a Mod that gets you Zeta Prime, Thundercracker and Skywarp for Multiplayer/Escalation.

Ignoring 2011's disastrous Dark of the Moon - and really, let's do that - Fall of Cybertron marks High Moon's second crack at the Transformers prequel universe it created, and it has managed an impressive second act. The fundamentals present in War for Cybertron have returned (minus one surprising omission) but High Moon has gone several steps further. By consistently adding new quirks and gameplay hooks and broadening its scale, Fall of Cybertron would shine as a unique shooter without the Transformers fan service.
I've been gaming since the Atari 2600, and I'm old enough to have hip checked a dude way bigger than me off of the game I wanted to play at an actual arcade (remember those) while also being too young to be worried about getting my ass kicked. Aside from a short hiatus over the summer and fall of 2013, I've been with Gamingnexus.com since March 2011. While I might not be as tech savvy as some of our other staff-writers, I am the site's resident A Song of Ice and Fire/Game of Thrones expert, and self-proclaimed "master of all things Mass Effect." I may be in my 30's, but I'm not one of those "retro gamers." I feel strongly that gaming gets better every year. When I was a child daydreaming of the greatest toy ever, I was envisioning this generation's videogames, I just didn't know it at the time and never suspected I would live to seem them come into being. Until the servers were shut down, Transformers: War for Cybertron featured a 3 player co-op campaign. Players can take the role of different class transformers to team up as both the Decepticons and Autobots. After you're done there you can hit up the game's 4 player co-op escalation mode where players work together to survive infinite waves of enemies while strategically spending points for weapon upgrades, health and more.
